Snow Puffies
If you know, you know and that means you are local!
Anytime someone heads out to Wailua/Haleiwa side, I hope they bring these back for us. These pastries called snow puffies, are from Paalaa Kai Bakery and they are heavenly! Layers and layers of a crispy flaky pastry stuffed and stuffed good inside with the sweetest cream that you just need to eat off of the ground if they ooze out when you bite into it, topped with sweet powdered sugar, and decorated with chocolate drizzle. It’s a combination that just makes you smile.
How much do I love it?
I can eat 3 full snow puffies at once! No joke. And I’d eat one a day if I could so it’s a good thing this place is far away from me. :)
I got to visit recently when our family went camping and the outdoor stove broke and we needed breakfast. My husband mentioned the “snow puffy place” was nearby so I volunteered to go out for the breakfast with the secret plan to buy one of these each for everyone.
When I went to Paalaa Kai Bakery, I discovered that they have a whole bunch of pastries and a whole market and bento shop next door! It was bumping with locals in and out, knowing what they wanted, and their team was jamming getting everyone in and out the door. It was quite a sight. Everything looked so ono so I ended up grabbing musubi, fried chicken (per my husband’s request), and a bunch of other little bento of mandoo, Korean pancakes, noodles, Korean sushi and some glazed donut holes. Oh man those were good too!
It was a rare chance I got to eat a snow puffy fresh and holy cow is it puffy! We usually get them from friends later after it has been sitting in the refrigerator and the cream inside starts to soak through the crispy layers flattening it out. It was so fat and fresh that I ended up going back a second time to get more for us and treat both sides of grandparents too.
Ok, I can’t write anymore because now I’m craving more and that’s a drive for me to get some. Bravo Paalaa Kai Bakery team and whoever came up with and continues to make these Snow Puffies! It’s a hidden gem that needs to be shared!
tip for peace:
If you are ever out in Wailua or Haleiwa, it’s worth the stop here. They’re open 6am to 6pm, five days a week so just don’t go on the two days they’re closed. And pack a cooler with ice for peace of mind that you’re ready to buy a few boxes to bring back and share…and have more later.
