Christmas Baking

If you don’t like baking, but your kids or family want you to, here are some reasons you can find peace as you make your own food and desserts this holiday season.

With a lot of family get-togethers this time of year and you needing to make something to share, it can feel like a lot. And even though kids want to help because they think it’s fun, we may think it’s just work. Kids think the powdered sugar flying everywhere looks like snow and for you, it’s just more mess to clean up.

Let’s flip the switch and perspective on this. Take a step back and assess what’s really happening here.

As a parent, baking can be a really great bonding and educating experience! It’s one hour of intentional time together in one space working on a shared goal. It teaches kids about the ingredients that are in the things they love to eat. They have to plan taking inventory of what’s available in the kitchen then planning to shop for additional needed ingredients. They have to learn time management working backwards from when the food needs to be ready and preheating the oven etc to get ready. They have to learn how to read directions and follow step by step which will also help them with their procedural writing. They have to learn how to read and take measurements making math applicable. They have to be safe and patient, waiting for things to bake. Then they have to follow through and help with the cleanup that comes after.

There’s a lot packed into making one pan of brownies or cookies! :)

It’s an activity they will love, and though it may not be something you love, you’ll love that you invested your time into teaching your kids’ life skills while also spending quality time with them. And as a bonus, you’ll have something delicious to share with other loved ones that you both can be proud of. :)

Happy baking!
