Tacos in the Garage

This picture represents a perfect evening of home-made street tacos, sauces, and everything from scratch in the garage of a friend’s humble home in Kalihi.

It was their son’s birthday party and instead of the usual Fun Factory and Pups of War experiences that we’re used to (which are fun don’t get me wrong), this one was a simple come over to the house and play, eat some home cooked food, and talk story in the garage.

And it was perfect.

I was reminded how beautiful the slow, simple, and intentional life is when we stop trying to keep up with the Jones’s, focus on what we can do, and be with the people we love.

We watched them cook, help set the table, and savored the food as it got darker and darker and our bellies got fuller and fuller. The kids had the best time for hours just running around in the yard, playing on an old broken little boat, and in a great big mud hole in the driveway. The sound of the stream behind the house was our music, and the cafe lights that hung in the garage created the perfect ambiance. Our hostess topped it off with a beautiful butterfly tea that she made with the flowers growing on her fence.

This was what my soul needed.

A reminder to slow down and savor and not let the hustle and bustle and standards the world sets, make us feel like we always need to do the next, new, and big expensive thing.

Do you feel God calling you to the table for some tacos in the garage?

Let’s find peace by piece in inviting one another into our homes, cooking a meal, and sharing stories in the garage. We don’t need a lot to fill our tummies and our souls.

“Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.” -Acts 2:46
