No WiFi by the River

There was no WiFi next to the river.

After a brief moment of panic and “What are we going to do?” running through my mind, I then let out a sigh of relief. This respite from the go-go world of connection and my deep desire to unplug, be in nature, and try to reconnect with God, was being answered.

Without the distraction of social, the opportunity to post, watch videos, or even stream music, I had no choice but to sit next to the river with a good old journal and pen and listen to the sound of the rushing water moving over the rocks, and hopefully also discern the sound of His voice.

You see, I felt like I hadn’t “heard” from God in a very long time and was earnestly seeking His wisdom and guidance on some things, and hoped this pause and getaway would be what I needed to hear Him.

And although I didn’t hear anything new or profound from Him, I definitely felt His presence in the sound of the river and the birds chirping in the trees, the smell of clean fresh air, the touch of the cool breeze on my face, the taste of the warm coffee down my throat, and the sight of everything in that moment down to the little bugs crawling on my pages.

The stillness of being outside doing absolutely nothing.

It was perfect.

Just what my soul needed.

Without the WiFi, there was still so much to enjoy.

When I looked up what WiFi stands for, I was surprised it didn’t stand for anything! It wasn’t an acronym or short for any definition. It was simply a name that was given. I let out a little laugh as I was reminded that the name above all names, is Jesus. He is the only one that can fill any void you are feeling with abundantly more than you could have ever hoped for or imagined.

No WiFi? No problem. We have Jesus.

Is God calling you to let go a “name” or someone or something you are relying on more than Him?

Maybe he’s trying to remind us to slow down enough to not hear from Him, but realize that all around us, He is here now. He has always been here and will never leave us nor forsake us. We can rely on Him.

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” -Deuteronomy 31:8
