Tips For Building Out A Space

Getting an empty space and building it out can be overwhelming. So how should we go about tacking this?

Piece by piece! :p

I get super excited when I stare at a white paper, a blank screen, or an empty room. But then as I envision and plan, it can also get super overwhelming to think of all the big things that need to get done and then all the super small things that keep popping up as you discover this lightbulb burnt out, there’s a hole here, there’s no power there, etc.

So the way that we tackled this was by looking at just one thing, (say windows for example), and start there. Just figure out one piece of it all. What to cover the windows with? Look at ideas. Shop around. Read reviews. Ask others. Measure. Then make a decision.

This picture captures it all for me. Standing on a ladder, holding a leveler, with the word “peace” on my back. As I struggle to find the center and keep my balance, I am also trying to keep the peace. And though I know exactly what I want, I am on a budget that can’t afford it all. And so, I have to make decisions, one at a time. My brain struggles going back and forth doubting and wondering “what if I find something better, cheaper, or this becomes available later?” but I am also working on a deadline.

So here’s my tip for overcoming the desire for perfectionism while working on a budget and timeline…

Think about the purpose for the space.

Why did we get this large empty space anyway? Who is it going to serve? What value is it going to add to this world?

With that, it doesn’t matter all that much if the chair is brown or black. If the window coverings are blinds or curtains though I really wanted plantation shutters. If it can serve its purpose, then it’s better to move forward then to sit and wonder and perfect the heck out of it without anyone else getting to enjoy or benefit from it.

finding peace by piece:

Work on one thing at a time. Make decisions. And remember the overall vision and purpose for the space. That will help you find the balance and give you the peace as you make one decision after another, peace by piece!
