Life On Crutches
“What happened?” everyone asks.
Me: “I sprained my right ankle good.”
"How did you do that?”
Me: “Stepping off of the curb.”
That’s it. That’s the story and I find myself at the All Access Ortho Urgent Care (which was fantastic by the way - clean and great service) and learning a lesson in humility and finding peace in what I CAN do and relying on what others can do to help for now.
But rather than this being a pity party story, I wanted share what I am most appreciating right now and what really helps a hobbling working mom of littles out!
Here are the daily routines & things established that I am appreciating:
1. Having a great partner/family/friend/coworkers to rely on. So many people have helped me and truthfully I really wouldn’t be able to do this without them.
2. Necessary things placed low around the house for kids to easily have access to. (eg: toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, paper towels, etc).
3. Set chores that helps lighten the load (eg: kids sorting laundry).
4. Wearing a fanny pack and backpack so hands are free!
5. Having clear hallways with a proper place for everything. (Ok so this one is totally still a work in progress! :p)
If you know someone with an injury that could use some help, here’s some starting points on what’s been helping me:
1. Driving (I hurt my driving foot) so appreciate rides or anyone else doing the errands.
2. Fresh cut fruits and sandwiches pre-made for the kiddos.
3. Disposable dishes so I don’t have to wash after breakfast, snack/lunch, and dinner at home.
4. Taking out the trash & other heavy duty things.
5. Prayers for a complete and speedy recovery!
Lesson Learned:
Definitely got a lesson in humility and to rely more on God’s strength and not on my own.
Opportunity Now:
I’ve had to ask my kids for more help and found out that my 5-year old, actually loves the fact that I need him and it’s his opportunity to step up and “be the hero.” It has been a blessing to witness him step into this role and serve others!
Hope for Our Future:
Because I’ve had to slow down and just watch my kids go through their routines, I’ve noticed what is still hard for them to do and what takes them so long and it helped me to empathize so I can better prepare and empower them for their future.
