Adult Rehabilitation Center
Do you know someone recovering from addiction, out of incarceration, or who just needs a place to live, bathe, have food, fellowship, chapel, counseling, and work therapy to get back on their feet to becoming a contributing member of society?
The place where many of you may drop off donations or shop at The Salvation Army Thrift store, is also the location of the Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC).
The ARC is defined as “A 75-bed residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation center for adult males that offers work therapy programs. It also oversees the 4 family thrift stores located on the island of Oahu.”
There are currently about 60 men at this location off of Iwilei Road who are able to stay there for 6 months to one year and be a part of the program. I was fortunate to receive a tour from Major Ronalee of the facilities and was impressed with the offerings and the support that it provided. And all without government funding!
The ARC is supported through private donations and thrift store sales! That means, all of our donations and purchases at all thrift store locations on Oahu, support this program! And the men here work receiving, sorting, and pricing our donations, as well as working the store and the property. It’s part of their rigorous work therapy.
Behind the scenes of the drop off spot, is a huge, very organized, clean, and systematic warehouse where donations are looked through and as much as possible, everything is put into the thrift store and not sent to the landfill. Everything that comes in they see as money to fund the program they are in and so they even have a paint and upholstery shop to mend worn out items to make them ready for use again. It is absolutely amazing to see the resourcefulness of taking one man’s trash and truly turning it into another man’s treasure while also supporting the rebuilding of another man’s life.
And if you know someone who is studying substance abuse counseling, they have a partnership at the University of Hawai`i for internship opportunities as well.
Wherever you are on your wellness journey, there may be opportunities for support for you. This is a wonderful resource to pass along if you know a man who may need it. And if you are working on the wellness of decluttering, know that your things are going into grateful hands, ready to receive anything you have to give.
