Egan’s Fitness

If you are looking to gain more energy and get strong, read on. And if you’re thinking, but I’m in my 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s+….then this is especially for you!

I’ve heard of Egan Inoue and his boot camp when they were in Manoa, but always thought, that’s for strong and fit people and not me. But I’ve always wanted to be one of those strong and fit people!

And then, I met Egan last year when he came into our chocolate store a few times and honestly, all I could think of was if this guy who is fit, friendly, healthy and happy, can look and feel great and doesn’t deprive himself and enjoys our dark chocolates, then I want that kind of lifestyle too! And if you don’t know who Egan is, look him up on Wikipedia!

He and his wife, Marcia, also just opened their brand new gym conveniently down the road on Punahou so went by one day to drop off chocolates to congratulate them on their opening. While there, I toured the very nice and clean facilities and ended up talking to Mel, who offered me a trial period. This was my chance to be one of those fit and strong people!

What I noticed right away was how friendly everyone was. It wasn’t a place of judgement or competition, but everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there and happy that I made it there too! And majority of the people there were older than me AND stronger than me! I was blown away and so inspired!

Everyone from the front desk to the ladies in their 50’s and 60’s doing way more push ups than me, to all of the coaches, seemed to love being there! I’ve met just six of the coaches so far and they are all so different, but so awesome! Coach Corrie cracks me up, always gets me excited to work out, and encourages me by name. Coach Vic gave me my chance to try those ropes, ladders, and punching bags that I’ve always wanted to try and even did some one-on-one punching lessons with us that I’ve come to love! Coach Tisha guides us as I get to zone out mid-week, but wakes me up with her crazy laugh and enthusiasm for burning fat and building muscles and nutrition tips. Coach Brent has some pretty funny stories, pushes you by name, and leaves you dripping on the floor by the end. Coach Rei has a gentle encouraging spirit, but also gets down on the floor next to you to show you the exercise, creates fun different stations. And co-owner and Coach Marcia, is such an inspiration leading, teaching, and taking classes beside you, while always making sure to give you a high-five and a smile in passing.

AND, these coaches do something different every time so it doesn’t get boring! In fact, I didn’t realize working out with weights could be so fun! The music is upbeat and my jam, the lockers, water filling stations, showers, and bathrooms, make it convenient to go to work right after, and parking is convenient too.

I even got to try out the new gym upstairs and the equipment is clean and the space feels open and welcoming. Not too big and overwhelming.

Like anything, at the end of the day, it’s the people that makes this place so special. And remember it’s a process to get to this point of peace. I didn’t try this on January 1st, I started mid-year in August 2023. The first month was just straight up hard. Hard to do everything and out of my comfort zone to do these exercises. Month two was getting into the rhythm as it became a habit and part of my routine. Month three was when I started to enjoy it more because I could feel the results inside. Month four was when I started to love it and looked forward to working out. And by month five, I didn’t want to miss a class and had met so many incredible people. Even a sweet lady in her 70’s who was my partner one day, had such incredible endurance, but told me not to give up. It took her two years before she could do a full sit-up and looking at her now, I am humbled to be around such relentless fighters who are taking care of their health!

I love it so much because I can efficiently get in a super good and fun workout in just 30 minutes before work. And if you’re still thinking, well that’s not me Erin. finding peace by piece:

Egan Inouye eats our chocolates. And if he can eat our chocolates and enjoy a healthy lifestyle, then I want that too! In other words, don’t deprive yourself, take care of yourself! And as they say, “Be fit forever. Don’t let your health hold you back!”
