Home Garden

When my husband needs a break, he works on our little home garden.

If you have just a little bit of land, a home garden can bring some excitement and refreshment to your family both physically and mentally!

My husband loves to garden and has always wanted to grow fruits and vegetables that we could eat. He got to do more of it in the past couple of years and our family (kids included) love to eat vegetables because it comes from our backyard!

Every day, Chris gets to be with nature by simply stepping outside for a few minutes. He quietly waters the plants and gets his hands dirty pulling weeds. It’s a break for him. He also gets the kids out of the house for fresh air and they don’t bother him because they themselves are searching for bugs, picking flowers, making mud pies, and quietly refreshing themselves. It’s a win-win for everyone.

Our home garden is small, but the produce grown in this space are constantly rotating keeping it fun and exciting. And bartering produce with neighbors or gifting interesting new fruits & veggies is exciting to share.

Here are some of the fruits & veggies we’ve successfully harvested so far:

  • Wing beans

  • Dragon fruit

  • Corn

  • Pineapple

  • Peanut butter fruit

  • Sugar cane

  • Mulberry

  • Tomato

  • Okra

  • Swiss chard

  • Papaya

  • Strawberries

  • Carrots

  • Peppers

  • Lemon cucumber

  • Basil

A garden provides some exercise and peace time for my hubby, fresh outdoor time for the kids, and fresh veggies on our plates at dinner. We also have a small little section of marigolds which is my fave to cut and put in vases around the house, bringing the outside, inside.

There are a lot of great places to get seeds, materials, etc to help you get started and one of the places my husband loves to go to is Ko`olau Farmers. You can also make it a little more fun and let the kids pick out garden signs or nomes to decorate too!

Make it yours. Your own little home garden to give you a break outdoors and some greens on your plate!

erin’s tip

Use your garden as an opportunity to bond as a family talking about what you want to grow, eat, and share. For actual gardening tips, I’ll have to do another blog that say’s “Chris’s tips” because he has the green thumb! ;)
