Foods We Tried In Hokkaido
In Hawai`i, people always want to know “What did you eat?” ;)
So here is an overview of the foods we ate while on our summer family vacation to Hokkaido and Nagoya. I don’t remember the names of all of the restaurants and places (sorry, since I was more focused on family than food), but here is the basic list of things to try (that you can just ask and find all over) and our personal favorites.
Hokkaido is of course known for their seafood and dairy products (aka soft cream) so must try those everywhere!
We tried the hairy crab of course and thought it was mild, light, and nice, but no strong flavor.
I learned they are also known for their soupy curry (simple comfort food I enjoyed).
We had thee Ghenghis Khan (jinhisukan) or cooked lamb and thought it was okay.
We had Sapporo beer…okay that one was really nice and refreshing!
Yubari melon and Furano melon of course! This was sweet and refreshing, but honestly, it taste just like the Honeykiss blue net melon you can sometimes find at Don Quiote! (You’re welcome…it’s our family’s favorite!)
I think we just missed having the miso ramen!
My recommendation is booking a food tour with a local who can take you where to get a taste of each of the things or at the very list, walk around and point out which places to try the foods you find on a Google search are the “recommendations of foods to try in Hokkaido!”
Finding peace by piece:
Different regions of Japan and different places around the world have the foods they are known for that you must try. We found peace eating piece by piece of these recommendations, experiencing what the locals love, and appreciating the foods they take so much pride in.
