Checklists For Training In The Shop

We are excited to welcome three new part time chocolate family members to our chocolate shop in the new year! And with every new person that comes in, we have training to do!

If you work in retail, restaurant, or anywhere for that matter in a supervisor/manager position, you know that people come and go and when they are with us, we want to get them up to speed as quickly as possible, add value to their life while they’re with us, learn their specials skills and talents that they can contribute and make their mark, and send them on their way with love and gratitude.

What helps us in the shop, is having SOP’s (standard operating procedures) or checklists, that’s clear and easy to follow. Once they show they got it done, they build trust and are free to have more autonomy in their work, work off of their daily lists, and refer back to them when reminders as needed.

We have a “shop binder” which includes a plethora of information, but the most popular checklists for training are:

  • Training Checklist (the ultimate guide of what you can learn in the first 3 months)

  • Shop Opening Checklist (how to prepare and open the chocolate shop)

  • Shop Restock/Cleaning/Packaging Checklist (what to do when the shop is open)

  • Customer Service Cheat Sheet (how to make authentic connections and build real relationships with our customers aka chocolate friends)

  • Shop Closing Checklist (how to close the chocolate shop)

It may seem basic and self-explanatory, but I’ve learned in my time training to never assume. This took time to build and are they are constantly being reviewed and refined as things change. But having a system in place helps us train consistently, thoroughly, and better every time.

Find what works for you and build some systems that will set everyone up for success!
