Honolulu Museum of Art

Craving art or a place to spark some creativity?

On Oahu, a trip to The Honolulu Museum of Art is a wonderful little spot to slow down, appreciate art, and sit and create. HOMA is our largest art museum with various genres of art, cultural pieces, different work from different time periods and places, and my favorite, gardens to sit in and ponder.

We took our kids there a while back and it was fun to watch their reactions to the different rooms. Some had them saying, “Wow” some leaving them confused and some rooms actually scaring my daughter as she “felt something scary” while being in a room with statues of foreign Gods.

The museum is free to local families one Sunday a month thanks to sponsor, Bank of Hawai`i, but if you plan to make a day of it, the admission is well worth it. There’s a paid parking lot a little walk across the street and I’d suggest staying and having lunch there too in their beautiful cafe.

erin’s tip

When our kids old enough to listen to “do not touch,” I found this to be a very interesting place to take them and see the art through their eyes. And when looking for inspiration to start something yourself, sometimes it helps to get inspired by viewing the finished work of others.
