Maui Favorite Foods

Looking for somewhere to eat or pick up food on Maui? Here are some of my favorites (in addition to the omiyage listed on my #things blog, “Sweet Omiyage” from Maui”).

Komoda Bakery
When going to Makawao, this old school bakery is a must stop and you must get their donut sticks. Basically glazed donuts holes on a stick, but theirs are soooooo good! Oh and their cream puffs are to die for too! Thankfully, when we swung by later in the late morning (and didn’t call ahead) we were lucky to snag two cream puffs in their just about empty case. Tip: Call ahead to reserve your pastries not one day in advance, but at least two!

Marlow’s Pizza
This is a new spot I heard about from a friend Nadia, who shared beautiful photos of this restaurant and was curious to go! So when we were in Makawao, we drove up to Marlow’s Pizza for some pizza and gelato to go. I wish we could have dined in, but glad we went anyway because the pizza was delicious! And they have coffee next door too! If you are looking for a nice place to dine in, I’d definitely recommend Marlow’s Pizza.

Makawao Garden Cafe
When it was time for lunch, we asked an aunty where to go because we were craving simple, home-cooked kind of food for us and the kids. She suggested Makawao Garden Cafe which we we were unfamiliar with, but was happy with her recommendation because it was the simple kind of satisfaction we were looking for. The owner and her daughter who cook everything, made our meal, served it, and talked story with us a bit. She shared a sneak peek of a beautiful little cafe she was planning to open next door too so can’t wait to see that next time we can go back. They are conveniently right by a bunch of small shops we love to visit across from Komoda Bakery, but slightly hidden in the back by the bathrooms! We ate crab and avocado sandwich, curry chicken salad, roast breast of chicken sandwich, cup of soup and it was delicious. My kids were also craving a cool smoothie and this place had it all!

Tin Roof
Finally, we had to try Tin Roof after all of the buzz with famous Chef Sheldon Simeon and his cookbook, “Cook Real Hawai`i.” I think everyone else wanted to try too because every time we went, it was busy! But what I loved was how conveniently close this was to our hotel and that you could order in advance online while on the road, then swing by and pick up. Then no waiting in loooooong lines! I liked the chow fun, the mochiko chicken with kakimochi, and saimin. We also had their mochi brownies with rainbow sprinkles for dessert. Simple food that hits the spot.

Food Trucks
There are a lot of food trucks near our hotel too so it’s fun just hopping around and exploring! The Kraken Coffee drive through truck right next to our hotel had a satisfying black cold brew!

This past trip, I didn’t get to go to The Mill, but when I did over 5 years ago, it was the best! Delicious food, breathtaking view, and I just remember everything I ate was good and the hand-cut pasta was my favorite! Oh and I missed getting my usual guri guri!

Disclaimer: I know there are so many more great foods on Maui, but this is what we enjoyed on our most recent visit! Guess we just have to go back?!

If you go to Maui (or live on Maui) enjoy my favorites for me!

erin’s tip

If you know of other places we should try, please share with me! Maui is growing and changing so I haven’t been to some old school spots in a while and wonder if it’s still the same + there are new places I must go back and try!
