7 Steps To Writing My Children’s Book
Writing a children’s book was one thing, but taking it from my Word doc to a book is another thing and a big, new process that I am embarking on now.
I wrote my first children’s book three years ago, edited it and began the search for an illustrator and publisher, but after being turned away and told “no” a few times, I put the project on hold….for 2 years!!!
My children’s book sat in my inbox and was re-written repeatedly on my “to do list” for two years! This year, 2025, I decided was the year of no more excuses because this story was not “bringing peace to our world” if I was the problem holding onto it and not getting it out into the world.
So here’s how I broke down what felt like an overwhelming project so that I would begin to take action. This is also my first time doing a children’s book so I had 2 years of excuses that I had to start defeating with daily steps. Here is the seven-step approach I took to help me get this back in motion:
Pray. First, I asked God for the wisdom and guidance to help me through this if in fact it was His plan, and that I was willing to surrender and stop if this wasn’t what He wanted for me or if the timing wasn’t right.
Visualize the end result. I visualized what this project could do for others. After all, I was about to put more time, effort, and resources into it so wanted to ensure that the end result was something that really mattered for the right reasons.
Set a deadline. I gave myself an actual date in the calendar of when I needed this completed by so I could share a deadline with others and start planning backwards.
Make the goal visible. Although this item was on my “to do list” that I viewed daily for 2 years, I moved it to the top of the list with my deadline beside it and shared it publicly with my team and others who could help hold me accountable.
Write out your fears. I journaled out all the fears I had about writing a children’s book and somehow, writing it out on paper, made it less daunting and made me more aware that a lot of my doubt and worries were only in my own head.
Put it in your calendar. I put a half hour time block in my calendar every morning at 5:30am to work on this, five days a week. Right after my morning routine and devotional time, this became my priority before the distraction of the world and my inbox had a chance to sneak in.
Keep at it. Be consistent and keep trudging along doing just the next step and the next step taking it one half hour block at a time.
I hope these steps that helped me get going again, will help you with whatever you have sitting in your inbox so you can get back to your project of “writing a children’s book!”
finding peace by piece:
We can’t do it all at once, but things won’t get done at all on its own if we don’t take action. Let’s find peace in knowing that we are making progress rather than excuses and even though it might not be perfect, it’s getting done!
