Stove Rice

Mmmm stove rice. “Stove rice, stove rice,” the kids chanted when my husband cooked up something for us to eat. What a beautiful thing to have fresh white rice made on a small butane stove in a power outage. Without our usual rice cooker powered by electricity, this was a simple luxury of fresh warm food, plus seasoned furikake packets, to complete a comforting meal after many hours in a power outage.

Even more comforting was to eat our stove rice inside a house with a roof intact, running water, available, and family by our side. It’s times like this that make us realize we have all we need and more.

That’s what storms do. When your activities and events are canceled, you’re stripped of the Internet and the distractions, the electricity and the ease of entertainment is no longer, and you are forced to sit at home together and face each other, everything slows down and we can clearly see, what matters most.

The storms remind us of the goodness in it. The things we can be thankful for. And what a comfort to know that God knows what we need and always cares for us. We are often anxious and worry about many things, but he reminds us to “look at the birds in the air” and how he cares for even them.

What storm are you facing?

Storms may disrupt our peace, but piece by piece, meal by meal, stove rice can remind us we have much to be grateful for.

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” -Matthew 6:26
